Cal's Patrick McMorris Participates in Vertical, Broad Jump at NFL Combine

Safety Patrick McMorris, who spent his final college season as a starter in Cal's secondary, was invited to the NFL Combine, which indicates NFL teams are interested in him.  However, he probably did not help his draft status with his performance at the Combine in Indianapolis on Friday.

Production is McMorris' strong suit, so perhaps what he put on film during games as a member of the secondary at Cal -- and, before that at San Diego State -- will impress NFL personnel enough to get him taken in the 2024 NFL draft.

McMorris was one of 25 safeties who participated in the Combine, but he was not among the 19 safeties who was timed in the 40-yard dash, which is the headline event of the Combine.

He did participate in the vertical jump and the broad jump, but was not among the top competitors in either.

McMorris recorded a vertical jump of 31.00 inches, which ranked 18th among the 20 safeties who participated, and it was 10 inches less than the best vertical among safeties -- 41.00 inches by Texas Tech's Tyler Owens.

The bench presses and shuttle runs were not conducted Friday afternoon.

Owens also had the best broad jump among safeties.  In fact, his broad jump of 12 feet, 2 inches was just one inch shy of the record.

McMorris' broad jump of 9 feet, 4 inches ranked 19th of the 20 safeties. who participated.

McMorris participated in all the drills for safeties, and seemed to perform well, although only the trained eye knows exactly what to look for in those drills.

Presumably McMorris will run a 40-yard dash for scout during Cal's Pro Day scheduled for March 21.

McMorris is trying to join a parade of Cal safeties in the NFL.  That group includes Camryn Bynum (Vikings), Ashtyn Davis (Jets), Elijah Hicks (Bears) and Jaylin Hawkins (Chargers). It is likely to also include Daniel Scott (Colts), who missed all of his rookie season after tearing his ACL, but hopes to make the 2024 roster.
